What is special about Astronomical Clock?

In addition to indicating the time, the clock functions as an astrolabe and displays data on the position of the sun and the moon, as well as other astrological data.

Why is it going to be repainted?

Zdislav Šíma from the Institute of Astronomy of the Czech Academy of Sciences has been monitoring the clock for four decades. He said that the face, which now has an airbrushed appearance of dark red to clear, lacks details to properly read the astrolabe. There were clear divisions between darkness and light.

“The astronomical clock is painted unacceptably and needs to be changed,” Šíma told Czech television. “These lines of the astronomical clock mark the exact moments, the limits of certain events. This [new face] probably looks like someone drawing blurry lines on a sundial, “he added.

How it was looking like originally?

Some science experts agree that changes to the face were a bad idea. The face, however, has changed several times over the centuries and there is no trace of what it looked like originally

Some errors on the astronomical clock face were detected and corrected in 1979. Other repairs took place between 1984 and 1986. This is the third oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest still in operation.
